Planning your aquarium

The library starting point is 55+ US gallons. Plan for the approximate 7-inch adult size and the species' normal activity, not just its current shop size.

The library suggests a group of at least 5. Count every individual when estimating stocking and swimming room.

Mixed-species aquariums may need substantially more space. Tank length, adult behavior, filtration, and hiding spaces all matter.

Tank setup and behavior

• Include planting or cover without removing all open swimming space.

Maintain a large, very stable warm-water aquarium with generous filtration and a consistent maintenance routine.

Food and feeding

Food options: Discus granules, Frozen brine shrimp, Frozen bloodworms.

Use appropriately sized, complete staple foods and rotate suitable foods for variety. Feed modest portions and remove uneaten food.

Additional care caution

Discus husbandry is demanding; do not combine it with cool-water species simply because their pH ranges overlap.

• Avoid or investigate Goldfish: Their long-term temperature needs are very different.
• Avoid or investigate Common / Comet Goldfish: Their temperature and husbandry needs strongly conflict.
• Avoid or investigate White Cloud Mountain Minnow: White clouds prefer cool water while discus require very warm water.
• Avoid or investigate Hillstream Loach: Hillstream loaches need cool, oxygen-rich, high-flow water; discus need warm water.
• Avoid or investigate Rosy Barb: Rosy barbs generally prefer cooler water.
