Planning your aquarium

The library starting point is 20+ US gallons. Plan for the approximate 8-inch adult size and the species' normal activity, not just its current shop size.

The minimum group count is not a compatibility recommendation; assess temperament, sex, territory, and tankmates.

Mixed-species aquariums may need substantially more space. Tank length, adult behavior, filtration, and hiding spaces all matter.

Tank setup and behavior

• Maintain stable, species-appropriate water and provide a mix of cover and swimming room.

Fancy goldfish produce considerable waste. Prioritize floor space, oxygenation, robust filtration and regular testing.

This entry is aimed at fancy goldfish; single-tail goldfish generally need much more space.

Food and feeding

Food options: Sinking goldfish pellets, Gel food, Blanched vegetables.

Use sinking goldfish diets or gel foods with suitable vegetable matter.

Use appropriately sized, complete staple foods and rotate suitable foods for variety. Feed modest portions and remove uneaten food.

Additional care caution

This entry is for fancy varieties; single-tail fish grow larger and need substantially more space.

Tankmate cautions in the checker

• Avoid or investigate Discus: Their long-term temperature needs are very different.
• Avoid or investigate German Blue Ram: Goldfish generally prefer much cooler water.
• Avoid or investigate Kuhli Loach: Their preferred temperatures overlap poorly for long-term care.
• Avoid or investigate Clown Loach: Clown loaches require warmer water than goldfish.
