Planning your aquarium

The library starting point is 10+ US gallons. Check adult size, grazing surface, oxygenation, and food supply.

Stable water and adequate dissolved minerals help protect shell growth. Do not assume that every snail eats the same foods or that an aquarium has enough natural algae.

Behavior and tankmates

Predatory snail commonly used to control other snail populations.

Check tankmates for snail-eating behavior, and keep medication ingredients in mind. Some snails reproduce readily, while others require specialized breeding conditions.

Food and feeding

Food options: Other snails, Protein pellets, Frozen bloodworms.

Offer supplemental foods when the tank does not provide enough natural grazing. Remove uneaten food before it fouls the water.

Tankmate cautions in the checker

• Use caution with Mystery Snail: Assassin snails may attack other snails; large healthy mystery snails are less vulnerable but the risk remains.
• Use caution with Nerite Snail: Assassin snails are predatory and may attack other snails, especially smaller or weakened individuals.
• Avoid or investigate Ramshorn Snail: Assassin snails actively prey on ramshorn snails.
• Avoid or investigate Malaysian Trumpet Snail: Assassin snails commonly prey on Malaysian trumpet snails.
• Use caution with Spixi Snail: Predatory and opportunistic snails may harm one another.
