Planning your aquarium

The library starting point is 3+ US gallons. Check adult size, grazing surface, oxygenation, and food supply.

Stable water and adequate dissolved minerals help protect shell growth. Do not assume that every snail eats the same foods or that an aquarium has enough natural algae.

Behavior and tankmates

Useful scavenger that can reproduce quickly when excess food is available.

Check tankmates for snail-eating behavior, and keep medication ingredients in mind. Some snails reproduce readily, while others require specialized breeding conditions.

Food and feeding

Food options: Algae wafers, Leftover fish food, Blanched vegetables.

Offer supplemental foods when the tank does not provide enough natural grazing. Remove uneaten food before it fouls the water.

• Avoid or investigate Pea Puffer: Pea puffers commonly hunt small snails.
• Avoid or investigate Assassin Snail: Assassin snails actively prey on ramshorn snails.
• Avoid or investigate Zebra Loach: Zebra loaches often eat small snails.
